THE Magnum

Now, I know what you’re thinkin’…

Whether it’s behind the wheel of Robin’s red Ferrari or rescuing some gorgeous 80s supermodel, Thomas Magnum defined the 1980s for many Americans across the country. Clad in the latest fashions of the island and armed with an easy smile, 3” shorts, and his 1911 (without a holster, of course) MAGNUM PI ran for a successful eight seasons, defining the bulk of the decade. Our hero lounged about Robin’s Nest, solving the problems of the locals, and avoiding the terse reprimands of Majordomo Jonathan Quayle Higgins III, VC. Throughout all the adventures across (and above, courtesy of the TC) the islands of Hawaii, Magnum always had his trusty M1911A1 for when the going got rough.

One challenge of celebrating Magnum PI’s handgun is the overall simplicity of his signature weapon. It’s generally accepted that Magnum was using a U.S. Navy-issued M1911A1, especially given that a reoccurring theme in the show is Magnum’s “resourcefulness” for not paying for things himself. The first time the M1911A1 is shown in the series, he pulls it from a seabag, and later episodes show him carrying his pistol in his old tiger stripe uniform, and in a M3 shoulder holster (the only holster he’d use in the series). The main continuity issue with this from a prop standpoint was the inconsistency of .45 ACP firing blanks. Therefore, a commercial production Colt’s Government Model “Big Letter” in 9x19mm was used instead. Fitted with GI stocks, the majority of viewers wouldn’t be the wiser as to its caliber or vintage.

Alchemy Custom Weaponry’s Q4 2024 RestoMod is not only an homage to the gun carried by the fictional P.I. (it’s actually Private Investigator), but a gun that sparked a lifelong passion for firearms in Tom Selleck, resulting in his incredibly important historical collection as well as his advocacy for the Second Amendment in years to follow.

Although the screen-used pistol was a 9mm masquerading as a .45 ACP, we have brought Magnum back to his roots, and the Lord’s caliber, with our latest Restomod. To ensure the gun doesn’t get lost on screen, we’ve cranked up the level of polish that we are normally commended for. Leather and gasoline work in tandem to create one of the most beautifully blued handguns we have ever created. In true “ACW RestoMod” fashion, we have redesigned the “Big Letter” Colt’s Government Model markings (only now you get a high-polished blued finish WITHOUT losing any of the roll marks, guys who have had custom guns know what I am talking about. A spur hammer, arched mainspring housing, and gold bead front sight are also fitted to the gun. You will have the choice between reproduction GI grips or a nice walnut checkered stocks from Wood Caliber (both included), but we all know which you’re going to have on this pistol. Now, this is where many might have stopped in their quest to recreate Magnum’s sidearm, but we’re not just anybody. To keep Magnum from losing his grip on the pistol throughout all the stunts in Ferraris and helicopters, we have added 20 LPI front strap checkering as well as on the arched mainspring housing. As a final touch, an engraved Cross of Lorraine, the cross from Magnum’s team ring, can be found on the bottom of our pistol’s dust cover. All the members of Magnum’s team from Vietnam wear this ring, made for them during the war.

To tie things together, this RestoMod is the first package gun offered by Alchemy Custom Weaponry, with two things we knew you’d just need immediately upon receiving your MAGNUM.

First, the watch. Season 4, Episode 1 of MAGNUM PI, “Home from the Sea” aired originally on Sep 29, 1983. In the episode, Magnum is thrown from his surf ski on the 4th of July, a day he has chosen for years to spend alone, in thought about the service and sacrifice of his father. When thrown, he’s trapped in open water, tracking the hours he has spent treading water, awaiting rescue, on his father’s old watch, a Rolex GMT-Master 16750. The episode creates a powerful generational bridge between father and son through this piece, which would remain on Magnum’s wrist for the remainder of the show. In honor of this, we have partnered with RWatchCo to create an Alchemy Custom Weaponry Pepsi GMT, our celebration of Magnum’s own timepiece, made in Macon, GA. The watch you receive will be serial numbered to the gun you receive, featured on the case back along with a homage to the Paradise Found “Jungle Bird” shirt famously worn on the show.

But your watch will not be the only thing connecting back to Magnum’s wardrobe. Magnum is forever tied to the Aloha spirit and aesthetic of the Paradise Found Hawaiian shirts, wearing a number of their shirts throughout the series. Most immediately tie Magnum to the red “Jungle Bird” shirt, but it is one of many, and these shirts are still made in Hawaii by Paradise Found, a perfect way to add Magnum flair to your wardrobe. In that spirit, this package will include a coupon, redeemable for a Magnum PI Paradise Found shirt of your choice. A gun, a watch, a Hawaiian – everything you need – from Alchemy Custom Weaponry.
